From the stimulus (attached below), we gathered many ideas we associated with it, the main being: remembrance, mermaids, memories, metamorphosis, peace and outward beauty - all interlinking with the stages of death.
For my choreography I have chosen to focus on memories; particularly happy memories and how they can shape the person we are giving us a sense of identity and individuality.
In our practical class we watched a video of Wayne McGregor giving a talk and demonstration of how he creates his own choreography which gave us some ideas of where to start with our own and how using a stimulus can help spark creativity. We then listened to the music we are using called ‘Atlantic’ and divided it up into ten sections so we each have a part to choreograph, and decided how we were going to end our sections so the next person knew how they were starting. After, we wrote down ideas the stimulus gave us (as previously mentioned) and thought about how they all link together. Following on from that we then broke off to start thinking about our individual sections and what message we want to come across. In my piece, which I’ll be mainly focusing on happy memories, I will try to use gestures of how a memory is recalled or relieved to help give my piece some context rather than dancing the movements. For example: taking a photo or looking through photos, storing them away. To help develop this I spent some time researching the science behind how memories are created and recalled, as well as the importance of saving your memories via a photo etc or by ensuring that you get plenty of sleep so that your brain can consolidate the sensory memories.

What methods did Wayne McGregor talk about in the video?
ReplyDeleteMcGregor talked about using a stimulus in this case, the letter ‘T’. He also spoke about the use of mental architecture and using movements to communicate ideas. Another method was about creating your own personal signature to add to your choreography to make it unique and stand out. I think this is a useful tool to use in the group choreography because we are each choreographing our own sections so by adding our own personal flair to it, each section will stand out.
DeleteWhat do you mean by own personal signature? Best wishes, Miss Davis
DeleteTo include movements which are personal to your own style to give the piece originality.
Deleteinteresting, and how will you make these moves your own personal style whilst also getting the message of your piece across with the references and research that you have done? Do you have an idea of what your own personal style is already?
DeleteI haven't really explored many styles other than ballet - except a bit of jazz and contemporary this half term. I feel most confident in ballet, so I feel as though my 'personal style' would be similar to ballet but less placed. I think my research and theme fit well with my style because they're similar to ballet but more lyrical so I have able to get my message across whilst making it my own.
