Week three

In this week’s practical class we started the lesson by practising the use of negative and positive space. We did this by one student making a position and then another student came and filled in the negative space creating their own position. We repeated this until all nine of us had done this. Afterwards, we then focused on our individual sections of the choreography. I also did some further research for my piece; however I have decided to focus on the movement of brain waves when a memory is being recalled or created rather than my original idea. Towards the end of the lesson I began to think about some movements I might include in my choreography, based on my research.

In my research, I found that there are many different types of brain waves which communicate different messages and I will aim to incorporate them in my work.

  1. I like that you explored the ideas of negative space and I also find it interesting that you have based your research on brain waves and memory. What will you be focusing on in your choreography now that you have changed your research?

    1. In my choreography I will be focusing on the ‘delta brain wave’ which is a slow movement and is mostly activated in a deep, dreamless sleep. Sleep is a crucial role in consolidating memories as the body is at rest and the brain wave connections are changing between the neurons. To recall a memory a particular group of neurons have to be activated. If the electrical impulse of the memory cannot reach the neurons to be stored, then the memory cannot be recalled and is forgotten - therefore sleep is important. With this idea, most of the movements I will include will be slow and have a light quality, which mirrors the idea of a peaceful sleep.
