Introduction to choreography

My name is Charlotte Carvosso and I'm 16 years old from a small village in Northamptonshire. I have been dancing since the age of 3 and I'm currently in full-time dance training at the School of Ballet Theatre UK; I hope that one day I will become a professional ballet dancer in a ballet company. So far I have only trained in classical ballet however at school we train in contemporary and jazz to support our classical training and help us become more versatile dancers. I am looking forward to trying new styles to help make me more versatile when it comes to employment.

I don't have very much experience in creating my own choreography however when I was around 12 I choreographed a solo for a photoshoot I did. This was mostly a ballet solo because it was the only style I had experience in, however my technique wasn't a great standard at that age. Two years ago in the first lockdown, my old dance school held a virtual choreography project where we all created a piece of choreography to a selected song. Due to the pandemic we had limited space and many of us had to film and create this piece in our gardens. The music was by Biffy Clyro so it was more rock based, which was new to me so I found it challenging as it was outside of my comfort zone. However, I found it fun to try something new and go out of my comfort zone. Again, this piece was mainly ballet based but there was some lyrical elements to it.

During this module I am excited to try new things and push myself out of my comfort zone as I think it will help me expand my knowledge and become a more versatile dancer. I think this is particularly important for the future when I am applying for jobs in companies as versatility is a popular skill that every classical company looks for when they're employing new dancers. I am also looking forward to becoming more creative with movements because I am so used to being told what to do in classical ballet and everything being placed correctly, whereas this module will allow me to expand my horizons on what you can do with movements and how you can create a meaning behind a piece of choreography; not just performing the steps.
